Bottom

Tyler and Bethany came up with an interesting spin by having the beast be a captive rather than a prince and that was their only good idea. Instead of making Beast a caged but fierce creature they made the facial sculpt and the colour scheme far too soft. Presented with a castle inspired by eastern culture they chose to try and incorporate the shape of the castle instead of referencing the wealth of mythological characters existing in eastern culture. Overall, a well deserved spot in the bottom.
Matt and Margaret's Beast seemed to suffer most in the execution. With an alien landscape and a bland Belle they really had leeway to do just about anything with their Beast and their John Jean inspired alien sketch seemed like a good direction. The elongated head would have been very striking on their already very tall model but their sculpt really fell short (literally and figuratively). The sculpt on the face seemed uninspired and the paint job was muddled. While he was scary in a creepy sort of way, the punched-in face left no room for him to become anyone's love interest. In the end the judges sent Margaret home because of her weak sculpting on the face.

Daran, Graham & George chose an effective concept for their Beast. He's becoming more like the castle and environment as time progresses and they did a good job of depicting a stony Beast. They did a really good job on execution, lots of detail on all their pieces, and they completed several. The judges said the design of the chest worked well with the robes and they do but I wish they had bulked up the shoulders, he looks more like a sad monk than a prince turned beast (esp next to Belle's oversized sleeves). Great paint job, appropriate choice of colours and the pink was a good idea but they could have played that more to add some more interest to a pale colour scheme. Well deserved top spot, I was pretty torn between the two top looks on who I thought should win.
Rashaad and Chloe, quite successfully, completed the most work for this challenge. (Possibly more than any first episode challenge from previous seasons.) Face, cowl, back, chest, full arms, and they even managed to paint their model's feet! Their direction of mutated aquaman was on point, they did a good job of referencing a scary sea creature and produced a great chest piece to hit the 'sexy' nail on the head. The amount of detail in the facial sculpt is staggering, Chloe really gave it a lot of texture and depth so it looks good up close as well as from far. My only minor complaint is that while the paint job was good, again, too monochrome. I think even a little more yellow would have made this really pop, plus all the green comes off more swampy than deep sea. Overall, this was definitely my top pick but I was unsure about the paint job.
Rashaad and Chloe's piece came out on top with Chloe taking the win for her spectacular face sculpt. Did you agree with the choices? I did. Great first episode, looking forward to the rest of the season!

I couldn't think anything could look worse than the extra but that bottom look really was bad; the top looks are great, the stone was really nice but gave off an 'older man' vibe with the robes. The green man looked better under the stage lights, he looked a nicer green with gold/yellow highlights there so I could see why he would have won. These were some heavy looks for a first episode so I look forward to it getting better!
